BIOGRAPHICAL
Illinois Man Signs
James B. Lemert, formerly of the University of Southern Illinois, will join the journalism faculty here at the beginning of teh fall term as assistant professor of journalism and directof of the Division of Communications Research.
Lemert holds the Ph.D degree from Michigan State University.
For the past three years Lemert has been assistant professor on the faculty of Southern Illinois University. Prior to that he was a newspaper reporter with the Chico, Calif., Enterprise - Record and the Oakland Tribune.

OBITUARY: 

WALDPORT - A memorial service will be held Jan. 14 for James B. "Jim" Lemert of Waldport, formerly of Eugene, who died Dec. 13 of kidney failure. He was 70.
Lemert was born Nov. 5, 1935, in Sangerfield, N.Y., to Jesse and Caroline Brown Lemert. He married Rosalie Bassett on March 21, 1972, in Mill City.
He grew up in Oswego, N.Y. He moved to Chico, Calif., as a teenager and graduated from Chico High School. He held bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism from the University of California at Berkeley and a doctorate in journalism from Michigan State Univer- sity.
He was a reporter for the Oakland Tribune newspaper in 1955-56 and for the Chico Enterprise Record from 1957 to 1960. He was an associate professor in journalism at the University of Illinois, Carbondale, from 1964 to 1967. He worked as an assistant professor at the University of Oregon in 1967 and was a full professor at the university from 1967 to 1997.
He belonged to Phi Beta Kappa, the American Association of University Professors and the University of Oregon Graduate Council. He collected traditional jazz records and hosted a jazz show, "Old Grooves," on KWAX FM radio.
He is survived by his wife, and a brother, John of Red Bluff, Calif.
The Jan. 14 service will be at 1 p.m. at St. Luke's-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Waldport. Neptune Cremation Service of Portland is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Kidney Association of Oregon.
