OBITUARY: 

Private services  for George Turnbull, 94, of 1687 Summer St. NE, who died Wednesday in a Salem Nursing Home, will be Saturday afternoon under direction of Howell-Edwards-Doerksen mortuary. Interment will be in Zena Cemetery.
The family suggests contributions to the University of Oregon School of Journalism.
He was a professor of journalism at the University of Oregon from 1917 to 1944, and was acting dean and dean of the journalism school from 1944 until retirement in 1848.
He later was an editorial writer for the Oregonian in Portland, editor of the editorial page for the Albany Democrat-Herald and historian emeritus for the University of Oregon journalism school until 1971.
He wrote five books, including a history of Oregon newspapers, and many articles on journalism and journalism history.
His students included former Oregon Governor Tom McCall, Judge Alfred T. Goodwin of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and the late U.S. Sen. Richard L. Neuberger.
He won numerous awards, including the University of Oregon's distinguished service award.
Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, he came to Washington State in 1892 and became a U.S. citizen in 1904. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Washington. Survivors include his widow, Mary Lou, Salem a son George Stanley, Jr., Palo Alto, Calif.; a daughter, Sarah L., Johnson, Salem; and five grandchildren.
