Well Known Civil war Veteran Resident of Salem Dies Suddenly
Dudley G. Henry, 83, veteran of the Civil war died Saturday at his home in Salem where he had lived since the death of his wife about a year ago. Preceding this, he had lived on a farm at Spring Valley.
Mr. Henry was born in Pike county, Missouri in 1843. He was the third oldest in a family of four sons and four daughters, all of whom died before him.
He enlisted in the infantry when the Civil war broke out, serving as a private in two companies of Missouri regiments. He took part in the battle of Vicksburg, the Red River campaign and other noted engagements.
He was discharged in August 23, 1864, at which time only 21 men were left in his company, the others having died.
He sailed for the west in 1868, coming by way of Cape Horn, and spent a year in California. Following that he was a stock raiser in *Klickitat county, Wash., until 1876, when he went to the Willamette valley and married Nancy Walker, daughter of Major N (sic – should be W) M. Walker, an early pioneer.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry lived on their farm in Spring Valley until Mrs. Henry died in September, 1925.
Mr. Henry is survived by three sons, W. W. Henry of Spring Valley, Claude W. Henry of Los Angeles, and Wayne D. Henry of Salem, besides one grandson, Kenneth Henry.
