OBITUARY:

Lyman D. Gibson’s Funeral Is Today
Services at 10 a.m. for Pioneer Resident of Salem Vicinity
This morning at 10 o’clock funeral services for Lyman Dorr Gibson, 83, one of Salem’s pioneer residents, will be held from the Clough-Barrick chapel. Dr. W. C. Kantner is to officiate with burial in the Zena cemetery.
Mr. Gibson died Sunday at a local hospital following 10 days’ illness. His parents, Davies and Sophronia Gibson, came west in 1852 and settled in the Eola hills after Davies Gibson had come first to California’s gold rush in 1849 and returned by way of Panama to get his family. The Eola homestead is still in the Gibson family.
Born in Homestead Cabin
Lyman Dorr Gibson lived on the homestead, where he was born in a log cabin on June 28, 1855, up until 20 years ago when he came to Salem to reside at 1234 South Commercial.
He married Harriett Patrick, daughter of another pioneer couple, Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Patrick, on January 1, 1885, and the Gibson’s golden wedding anniversary was observed several years ago with a large reception.
To the last, Mr. Gibson retained his active interest in the progress of development of the Willamette valley which he had observed from Indian days until the present.
He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Harriett C. Gibson; sons, Rex, Fred, Duane and Lee Gibson, all of Salem; brother, Cass Gibson, of Salem; grandchildren, William, Paul, Rose Anne, Sandra Lee, Wallace Dorr Gibson, all of Salem.
