OBITUARY: 

Grace Mae Curtis, February 27, 1905-June 18, 2004

Salem – Grace, 99, passed away peacefully Friday evening, June 18th. She was born February 27, 1905 to Carl and Sarah Della Evans Nichols in Albion, Neb. The family moved to their sod house on the homestead in Fort Morgan, Colo, where they farmed their land. After graduating from high school Grace attended college for two eyars and was the teacher at Sunny Side where she had attended through the 8th grade. She met Edward Curtis and they marrie don October 9, 1926. They moved to Oregon where Grace was a housewife and mother of two. She later worked as a residential housekeeper and special mentor to many friends and family. They built and lived in numerous homes arounde the Salem area. Grace enjoyed gardening, growing and canning fruits and vegetables, flowers,a nd listening to the rain and the birds. She loved nature, reading, and quiet reflection. Grace was a faithful woman of Jesus and lived her life according to the Bible. She was patient and generous and always had time for her family, children, the elderly, or someone in need. She was a member of Jason Lee United Methodist Church and volunteered at that food bank for many years. She was preceded in death by her eloved husband, Ed; her daughter, Leona Curtis Arnett; her son, Harold; and four brothers, Albert, Orville, Doug and Zane. She is survived by four sisters, Evelyn Clark, Phyllis Jess, Blanche Venard, and Mary Senseney; a grandson, Brad (Merrie) Paynter; a granddaughter, Jan (Larry) Pfennig; three lovely grandchildren, Kaylee Pfennig, Makenzie and Braden Paynter; and numerous wonderful nieces and nephews. Grace will be deeply missed by all the lives she touched. The memorial service will be at Jason Lee United Methodist Church, 820 Jefferson NE, Salem, at 2 pm Sat, June 26. Contributions may be made to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
