William McArthur, July 28, 1918-April 24, 1997
Dr William D. McArthur of Salem died April 24 at his home of congestive heart failure. He was 78. Born in Keokuk, Iowa, to Leland and Nellie Greet McArthur, he grew up in Long Beach, Calif, and graduated from the University of California-Santa Barbara in 1940. While attending the university he was a Little All-American football player. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps. He was a professional football player with the Chicago Rockets of the All-American Football Conference. After his marriage to Margaret Walker of Long Beach in 1946, he taught and coached at Gold Hill High School in Southern Oregon. He was hired as the head football coach at Oregon College of Education, now Western Oregon University, in 1947, where he continued to teach as professor of physical education and also coached track, swimming and gold until his retirement in 1983. He earned his doctorate in education from Oregon State University in 1956. Following retirement at the college, he was head football coach at Regis High School in Stayton for three years then returned to Western Oregon as head football coach for the 1991 season. He was also a licensed pilot, pilot instructor and water safety instructor. Among his many awards were introduction into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. Survivors include his wife, Margaret; sons , Mike McArthur of Sherman County, Steve McArthur of San Francisco, Calif, and Kelly McArthur of Portland; a brother, Richard McArthur of Las Vegas, Nev; and one grandson. Funeral services will be at 10 am Thursday, May 1 at the Farnstrom Mortuary in Independence. Interment will be in Smith Cemetery in Monmouth. A memorial service will be held at 3 pm on Thursday, May 1 at McArthur Stadium on the Western Oregon University in Monmouth. Contributions may be made to the Western Oregon Foundation.
