OBITUARY:
F.M. Smith, aged 85, one of the oldest remaining pioneers of Polk county, died Sunday night at his home in Dallas. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Henkle & Bollman chapel with interment in the Smith cemetery at Lewisville. Rev Dean Vermillion, pastor of the Evangelical church, officiated. Mr Smith was the son of James and Elizabeth M. Smith, who crossed the plains in 1846. They experienced many hardships in their trek to Oregon and finally settled in the Lewisville community. Mr Smith was born on his father’s donation land claim November 1, 1850. He lived there 60 years and after his retirement came to Dallas to make his home. He was preceded in death by five sisters and two half-sisters. Surviving are six nephews, Commissioner C.C. Gardner, Link Gardner and Otis C. Smith of Dallas, Tracy, Homer and Jimmie McTimmonds of Sodaville and two nieces, Ethel Kau of Sodaville and Mrs Mary Davis of Dallas, and other nephews and nieces in Washington. Mr Smith was greatly interested in civic affairs and was a generous patron of the Dallas hospital and local Evangelical church. His giving, however, was in a very unostentatious manner. He lived in the same manner and was greatly beloved by a large circle of friends. Itemizer Observer, Thursday, January 2, 1936, 1:5
