Mrs. Rufus F. Dodge (Rachel Laverne Burns), aged 49, passed away Monday night at the family home on the Little Luckiamute. Mrs. Dodge, who had been in poor health for the past year, was stricken with pneumonia about a week ago. Her husband has been critically ill from the same disease.
Mrs. Dodge was born August 25, 1883, the daughter of James H. and Phosa Burns, well known early pioneers of Polk county. Her entire life had been spent in the community and her home at death was on a part of the old Burns donation land claim. She was married to Mr. Dodge in September, 1909.
Mrs. Dodge was a member of the Dallas WOW circle and of the Evangelical church at Lewisville. She was a granddaughter of Mrs. M. J. James, who until her death two years ago in her 100th year, was Polk county’s oldest resident. Mrs. James had made her home with the Dodge family for some time.
Mrs. Dodge is survived by her husband, a daughter Miss Helen Dodge, now teaching near Joseph; two sons, Joe and Jim, both at home, and one brother H. E. Burns, also of Dallas.
