WHOLE LIFE SPENT IN THIS LOCALITY
Born in Salem in 1850, Mrs. L. H. Atwater Has Been An Invalid For Years.
Mrs. Lewis Atwater died at her home in this city Friday evening [May 29] after a long and lingering illness. Mrs. Atwater had been an invalid for many years past. Her childhood name was Matilda Catherine Zumwalt and she was born in Salem, August 16, 1850. She was a daughter of Isaac Zumwalt who crossed the plains from St Charles county, Missouri in 1846. The family settled on a donation land claim near Lewisville in 1853 and the greaer part of her life was spent in that vicinity. She was married to Lewis Henry Atwater in Dallas, January 3, 1882. 
They lived first on the Zumwalt homestead near Airlie but at the end of three years Mr. Atwater bought a farm of Reuben Simpson in the vicinity of Pedee where they lived until 1921 when they came to Monmouth. Beside[s] her husband she is survived by two sons: Charles M. Atwater of Monmouth and John M. Atwater of Toledo, Oregon. One sister and two brothers also survive out of an original family of twelve children. They are: Nancy, wife of Wiley Norton of Lewisville, Lewis Zumwalt of Hillsboro, Oregon, and George Zumwalt of Los Angeles, California. One of her sisters was the mother of Emmet Staats. Funeral services were held with A. L. Keeney directing, in the Montgomery cemetery near Lewisville, Sunday, May 31 at 2 p.m. Rev. Victor Morris, pastor of the Monmouth Christian church officiated.
