OBITUARY:
A PIONEER GONE
By the death last Thursday of Mrs. J. J. Bell, Polk County lost one of it's oldest residents and the vicinity one of it's most respected citizens.
Elizabeth Ford was born in Kendall County, Illinois, on the 15th day of June, 1838.  When she was 15 years old her parents, James and Mary Ford, with their family, accomplished the long and dangerous crossing, settling and building them a home in 1853.  Three years later, in 1856, Elizabeth Ford was united in marriage to J. J. Bell.  Twelve children blessed this union, five of whom survive.
Mrs. Bell died at her home near the Bridgeport school house on Thursday, May 22, 1902, aged 64 years, 11 months, and seven days.  the funeral was held on the day following.
The death of Mrs. Bell reminds us that the old settlers, those who underwent rigorous life and privation of the early pioneer days are dropping rapidly out and leaving the land, the foundation of whose prosperity they laid in the hands of the younger generation and those who have made Oregon their adopted home.  The debt we who are reaping the fruitage of their toil owe to their memory is paid by loving remembrance and honor.
[Citations to above newspaper obituraries were not given.  Copy in THE FORD FAMILY of Maryland, Ohio, Illinois & Oregon, 1780 - 2002 by Pat Wahl of Salem, Oregon.]

Mrs. Bell, who was a sister of James, George, William and Robert Ford and lived at Bridgeport for so long, died there last week and was laid to rest in the Hart burying ground. Some 20 years ago she lost seven children in ten days with diphtheria.
