BIOGRAPHICAL

"Robert and Susan (Estes) Tarter arrived in 1853 as part of the Sam Barlow migration.  They settled on their DC April 11, 1855. Robert later built the first four bridges to span the Luckiamute River between the Rice Simpson DLC and the Willamette River.  He built barns and many chimneys for the pioneers in the area.  In 1882, he also built the first store in Airlie.  Robert was assisted by his nephew, Ballard Tarter."
