OBITUARY:
Vere Leslie Staats, 56, a native son of Polk county born to early pioneers, died Saturday at the McMinnville hospital. Vere resided at Oceanlake where he had operated a drug store since 1936. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at O’Malley’s Funeral Home in McMinnville with the Masonic lodge of Taft participating. Rev. Dickey of Oceanlake conducted the service. Vere was born at Airlie September 9, 1898, son the the late M.r and Mrs. C.E. Staats. He attended Airlie grade and high school and graduated from Oregon State college with a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy. He was employed for a number of years in the Dallas Pharmacy by the late R.R. Van Orsdel and also worked at his profession in McMinnville and Newberg before buying the Oceanlake store. He married Lyle Yexley of Oregon City, a domestic science teacher in Dallas high school, some 30 years ago. She preceded him in death in 1952. They were the parents of three sons, Vere Jr, who resides in The Dalles with his wife and son; Lloyd, a student at Oregon State; and Donald, who resides with his wife and two children at Corvallis where he attends OSC. Vere Jr. and Donald saw service in Korea but Lloyd suffered an impairment from polio in his boyhood which kept him out of the service. Mr. Staats was a veteran of World War I. The only surviving member of his immediate family is Dr V.C. Staats of Carlton. His sister, Mrs. Eva Staats Ritner, was killed in an auto accident near the Little Luckiamute bridge on the Pedee highway, May 30, 1938.
Vere was active in baseball in his younger years, playing town team ball in Dallas and was noted as the long ball hitter of twilight league days here. He became a member of Jennings lodge No 9, AF&AM of Dallas, April 22, 1921, but transferred to the Taft lodge in 1946. He was also a member of the Eastern Star and Odd Fellows lodges.
