Elma Tarter, July 3, 1909-Feb. 13, 1996
Elma Luella Tarter, formerly of Independence, died Feb 13 in Salem following a brief illness. She was 86. She was born in Daisy, Wash, to Richard and Rose Moss Young. For the past three years Dallas has been her home. She moved from Airlie to Salem in 1965, to Pedee in 1974 and to Independence in 1989. Following her retirement from Blue Lake Cannery, where she worked as a cook, she began driving a bus for the Monmouth and Independence senior centers. She enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the “Swinging Singles.” Survivors include sons, Henry Tarter of Keizer, Ray Tarter of Airlie and Robert Tarter of Salem; daughters, Mary Lou Johnson of McMinnville, Arlene Baxter of Hermiston and Charlene Lytle of Dallas; a sister, Gladys McCormack of Hoquiam, Wash; 25 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Services were held Feb 16 at Farnstrom Mortuary in Independence. Vault interment followed at the English Cemetery in Monmouth. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Mid-Willamette Chapter, PO Box 12768 in Salem.
