OBITUARY: 
Burris S. Hastings passed away at the family home in Independence Thursday, September 30 at the age of 79 years. Mr Hastings was born at Walla Walla, Wash, September 3, 1864 and for 14 years lived at Kalotus, Wash, moving from there to Airlie where he resided for 64 years. While at Airlie Mr Hastings devoted much of his time to farming and with his brother, Green Hastings, operated a store and warehouse in Airlie. In 1894 he was married to Esther Rose and to this union three children were born, namely: Mrs Ruth Davis, Dever, Wyo, Mrs Opal Ostrander, Bremerton, Wash, and Mrs Vida Davis, Toledo. Besides his widows he leaves 10 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs Pearl Hedges of Independence and Mrs Alice McDaniel of Portland and two brothers, Joe Hastings of Portland and John Hastings of Independence. Funeral services were held from the Smith-Baun mortuary Sunday, October 3 at 2 o’clock with Rev W.A. Elkins of Monmouth officiating. Interment was in the Old English cemetery south of Monmouth.
