OBITUARY: 
Masonic services will be conducted by Pacific Lodge No 50, AF&AM, at 1:30 pm Wednesday at Virgil T. Golden mortuary for Stephen Tarter, 86, of Salem, who died Friday. Interment will be in English Cemetery, Monmouth. Born in Airlie, he was a lifelong resident of the Hopewell and Airlie areas, and moved to Salemtowne in 1971. He was a farmer and a former volunteer fireman with the Hopewell Fire Department, and was a life member and past master of Pacific Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his daughter, Patricia DeRaeve, Amity, sons, Royal Tarter and Dr Ralph Thompson, both of Salem, Nap Thompson, Lincoln City, and Francis Thompson, Sheridan; sisters, Elta Sams, Corvallis, and LaVerne Riker, Albany; and brother, Guy, in Florida. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
