OBITUARY:
William Wallace Collins was born March 2, 1843, near Marthasville, in Warren county, Missouri. He was one of a family of twelve children born to Smith Collins and Eliza Emily Wyatt Collins who crossed the plains to Oregon with ox teams in 1846. He was in the first company of immigrants who came by the way of the Klamath Lakes and through the Rogue River and Umpqua vlleys. This was the first year that the immigrants ever drove their wagons into the Willamette valley. His father settled on a donation land claim about a mile south of the Luckiamute river. After his father’s death he obtained title by inheritance and purchase from others of the heirs, to 320 acres, lying partly in the donation claim where he had his home until the time of his death, which took place April 13, 1912, and was 69 years, one month and 11 days old. In May, 1870, he was married to Miss Mary Leticia Fuqua, of Parker Station, in Polk county. To them were born six children. He is survived by his widow, a daughter, Mrs Mollie Wiled of Albany, and Ralph Collins, who resides on the farm. He was an intelligent, active business man and a good neighbor, respected by all who knew him. In politics he was a staunch Republican, but never sought office. He was at one time a Commissioner of his county. Religiously he believed in God, in Christianity and in a pure and honest life, which he lived to the best of his ability to the day of his death.
