OBITUARY:
Funeral services were held at the Walter L. Smith mortuary here Wednesday for Laydue R. Hill, 91, who died at Waldport on December 11. Masonic services were in charge of R.V. Carleson [line missing] grand lodge of Oregon, with final rites at the Pioneer cemetery north of Independence. Mr Hill was born on November 26, 1858, on the Henry Hill donation land claim, now occupied by the business district of Independence. He was the third child of Henry and Martha A. Hill, pioneers of 1847. He attended the public schools at Independence and spent most of his life on the home farm except for a few years on stock ranches in Crook and Lincoln counties. With his father he set out one of the first hop yards in Oregon in 1881 which he continued to operate for about 25 years. The yard is still producing and is known as the Dewey Hill hop farm and at present owned by D.F. Kennedy. He joined Lyon lodge No 29 in Independence and became a Master Mason on January 20, 1883. He had been a member of that lodge for over 66 years. Mr Hill, who was better known here as Dewey, was noted for his generosity. Among his gifts was a block of land to the city for a all park and a tract of land for the Buena Vista cemetery. He is survived by one brother, Verd Hill of Independence; one granddaughter, Dorothy Lehman of Elkhart, Ind; and the following nieces and nephews: Ellis J. Burch of Buea, Calif, Martha H. Hill of Monmouth, Wendell H. Denlinger of Kellogg, Ida, Orville H. Hill of Independence, Eleanor Hill Yancey of Lebanon, and Constance Cohrs Henderson of Corvallis and Verda F. Hill, Monmouth; also 11 grand nieces and nephews.

The death of Laydue R. “Dewey” Hill last week at his ranch on Eckman creek near Waldport, just a few weeks after he celebrated his 91st birthday, wrote the final chapter to the career of one of this city’s most influential citizens in its early days. Death occurred Sunday morning, December 11, at his Lincoln coun ty ranch where he ahd been living in retirement for the past 15 years. The body was discovered by Mr and Mrs Emil Dallenbach, kindly neighbors, paying their daily visit to see that the old gentleman lacked nothing for his comfort. Receiving no answer to his knock at the door, Dallenbach forced his way inside only to find his old friend lifeless. Only his close friends knew that Hill had once enjoyed fame and prosperity in the days when he owned extensive holdings here. His reduced circumstances in later years were due largely to a goodness of heart that had caused him to be too generous to others. The death of his only son, Clyde H. Hill, in 1946 after a long and painful illness during the latter part of which he lived with his father at the Eckman creek ranch, was a cruel blow to the elder Hill. According to the Waldport Record, “In his declining years Hill gave the impression of being quietly happy and content to be alone, although enjoying the frequent visits of some of his brother Masons who made it a point to see that he had wood and provisions and brought him into Waldport once or twice a week. His most prized possession was a 5-year Masonic pin, bestowed on him last year by Burt Gainer of the Alsea Bay lodge. Only last week the Record published a letter from Mr Hill in which he thanked his friends for their kindness in remembering his birthday. In it he said: “The older I get the more I realize the value of friendship” and it may be truly said that in that respect, Laydue Reason Hill was rich indeed until the end of his days.”
